Poznań's fortifications have existed for over 1000 years - their history dates back to the Middle Ages. In the first half of the 19th century, a huge polygonal fortress was built. Later, after the unification of Germany, the fortifications were extended in a modern fort system. In the years 1876-1886, 9 main forts (No. I - IX) and 3 smaller intermediate forts (IVa, VIa and IXa) were built around the city. In the years 1887–1890, the ring of fortifications was extended by another 6 intermediate forts of a new type (Ia, IIa, IIIa, Va, VIIa and VIIIa) and several dozen bunkers for infantry, artillerymen and for storing ammunition. The fortifications were expanded and modernized until the outbreak of World War I and eventually created a complex system of fortifications, covering a huge area with a diameter of almost ten kilometers.
The main forts had a hexagonal outline. Their main task was to conduct artillery combat against the enemy and provide shelter to their own forces. The most important part of the fort was an earthen artillery rampart, which housed positions for heavy cannons for long-range combat and for light cannons to cover interfields, as well as brick shelters for cannons and artillerymen. Underground casemates under the rampart provided shelter for the crew, ammunition and gunpowder. In the rear part of the fort there are two-story barracks for the crew and the main entrance with a gate and a drawbridge. The fort was surrounded by a moat 6 m deep and 9 m wide, protected by light cannons and caponier rifles in the front and shoulder corners and in the barracks. The most important buildings in the fort were connected by underground corridors.
Fort I was built in 1878–1880. On the artillery embankment, in addition to the usual gun emplacements, two brick cannon posts for 15 cm ring cannons were built on the coastal beds. In 1881, the fort was supplemented with a short section of infantry rampart in the middle of the forehead. In the years 1887–1890, the walls of the underground buildings were strengthened, and artillery batteries with ammunition shelters were added on the sides of the fort. Around 1892, two steel observation cupolas were installed for infantry. The fort was modernized until the outbreak of World War I. During World War II, the moats were covered to house the workshops and warehouses of the Focke-Wulf aircraft factory.
The fort - despite the war damage - is preserved in good condition and used. The facility is used for production and storage purposes. Visiting the interior only with the consent of the manager. Part of the building is damaged and abandoned, potentially dangerous. People without experience in fortress tourism are recommended to use the help of a guide.
