One of the many places with beaver tracks that you will find in this beaver-rich area. Please note: coypus and muskrats are also found here. Always look to the other side of the path, to the swamp, and to the places where the beavers move. And of course there are tracks in the water and castles here and there. Sometimes there are small bridges, like here (made of steel), but it is better to leave the animals alone.

At the end of 2003, eleven beavers were released in the Maasplassen area near Thorn and Stevensweert. Very quickly, at least 4 of these animals had established themselves in the Kempen~Broek, namely a couple in the Mariahof and one in the Zig (Dijkstra & Kurstjens, 2006). In 2009, this group had already expanded to at least 3 to 4 territories of approximately 10 to 15 animals (Kurstjens, 2009). In 2014, many streams and swamp areas in the border region were occupied by Beavers. In 2017, there were an estimated 25 to 30 animals in Kempen~Broek, spread over approximately 8 locations. Families had already been observed in the Kootspeel/Roeventerpeel, Moeselpeel, Roukespeel, Heijkersbroek, Smeetshof, Mariahof and Zig; In addition, there are also solitary animals at some locations (Kurstjens, 2014).
