The monastery town of Rehna was founded in the middle of the 12th century by settlers from Rhena, Hesse. The Romanesque village church was mentioned in 1230 and in 1236 the monastery was founded. At the foundation, a certain Frater Ernestus, who probably came from Ratezburg, but no mention other than in connection with the foundation of the monastery in Rehna.

The city center and the monastery building were redeveloped in the context of urban development in the period from 1991 to 2005.

It makes sense to get in the information center at the monastery, the paperbound tour. In this brochure you will find numbered, with photos and description and on a map entered the sights of Rehna. Apart from the B104, it is a quiet, beautiful little town.

The monastery town of Rehna - historical, lively, green

The monastery town of Rehna in the heart of northwest Mecklenburg is located on the Radegast river, picturesquely embedded in a gentle, hilly landscape. With its half-timbered houses, the artesian wells and the former monastery complex in the center, the city tells its story at first glance. Founded in the course of Christianization, the place is inextricably linked with the monastery. The well-preserved monastery complex from the 13th century with a monastery garden laid out according to historical models and a Kneipp basin form the center of Rehna.

On a walk through Rehna you will find six artesian wells that have been spewing water without pumping for about 100 years. There are many stories and legends about these fountains. Special half-timbered houses in Rehna are the German House, the Zeiss'sche House on the market and the historic houses on Mühlenstrasse. Many beautiful, colorful old front doors shape the cityscape.

Rehna is also the northern gateway to the Schaalsee - Elbe biosphere reserve. Pilgrimage and hiking trails between the monasteries Rehna, Ratzeburg and Zarrentin lead through natural alluvial forests and wet meadows, past inviting lakes. Those who want to experience gentle tourism in harmony between man and nature and are interested in a piece of brick Gothic from Mecklenburg should visit the monastery town of Rehna.
