It is famous for its marble, and already in the 1st century AD the Romans exploited the quarries, now in disuse. There are literary references that describe Ereño as "Capital of the marble route", material found in many buildings in Urdaibai, and also on the other side of the ocean.
According to data from the historian Tomás de Goikolea, Ereño was established in the 9th century, and the inhabitants of the municipality could be direct descendants of those who lived in the Santimamiñe cave.
