The Plaza de Armas is one of the most iconic attractions in the city. It was in this place that Francisco de Aguirre, by order of Pedro Valdivia, refounded the city of San Bartolome de la Serena on August 26, 1549. It is surrounded by Los Carrera streets to the east, Arturo Prat to the north, Matta to the west and Gregorio Cordovez for the south.
