Corte is the historical and cultural capital of Corsica. It was on the initiative of Pascal Paoli (one of the most famous people on the island) that this city in November 1775 was chosen as the capital of independent Corsica. In doing so, Corsica separated itself from the Republic of Genoa. You can learn even more about the history by visiting the Corsican Museum which is located within the city's citadel. Corte is amazing, because as soon as you leave the city, you immediately find yourself surrounded by nature.

"Corte was the capital of the island at the time of Corsica's independence under Pasquale Paoli and is still referred to as the secret capital of Corsica. To this day, Corte has remained a symbol of the struggle for independence and self-determination of the Corsican. It is the only important city in Corsica Corte is not by the sea, but deep in the northern interior, wonderfully situated at the confluence of three rivers, overlooked by the citadel built on a rock. Today Corte is again the seat of the only university in Corsica, the students make up about half of the approximately 6500 inhabitants of Cortes and shape the unique, lively atmosphere of the city. A trip to Corte is a journey into the heart of the island and is one of the highlights of a holiday in Corsica. In the immediate vicinity of the city, the deep, beautiful river valleys of the Restonica and of the Tavignano with its bathing pumps the vacationer innumerable possibilities n for hiking, climbing or just relaxing in one of the most beautiful natural settings in Corsica.
