"Zeller Schwarze Katz" Roundabout Figure, Zell
On August 18, 2012, the new oversized Zeller Schwarze Katz sculpture was finally unveiled on the new roundabout with an opening ceremony hosted by the Wine Queen. Standing 5 meters tall, it now raises its glass to the sky, toasting the crowd. So, I can now let the cat out of the bag and reveal the final secret of my pyramid, in whose (weather) protection this oversized sculpture, weighing almost 9 tons, was created since November of last year. To ensure smooth transport from the studio's outdoor area to Zell on the Moselle, certain dimensions and weights could not be exceeded. Therefore, the iron-reinforced foundation plate with a diameter of 2.5 meters and the almost 1.90-meter-long half wine barrel on top was created first. The upper, second half of the barrel is the base plate for the actual cat sculpture. The three iron reinforcements for the tail and legs were cast into it, each consisting of a 70 mm outer tube, an inserted 50 mm inner tube, and an inserted 20 mm steel rod, which were cast into each other. After the legs and tail were constructed and finished, the body block, also made of iron, was constructed and then finished. The surfaces consist of a black or dark brown cement coating. The gray base area, still visible in the photos, is filled with fill to create the core of a typical Mosel vineyard, from which this Zell Black Cat welcomes visitors.

Probably the most-told story goes back to the year 1863: Three wine merchants from Aachen were visiting the wine cellars of Zell to find out which wine was the best. At the end of a long night at the Mayntzer winery, three barrels were shortlisted. However, agreement on a barrel could not be reached. Later the winemaker's black house cat came into the cellar. Just as the vintners were about to tap a new sample, the cat jumped onto one of the barrels and arched its back. She would no longer let anyone near the barrel and hissed at anyone who approached the barrel. Since the cat was defending the barrel, this was taken as a sign, so the merchants decided to choose this wine as the best. A short time later, the Aachen merchants came back and bought all the wine from the so-called Siegerweinbergslage and sold it under the name "Zeller Schwarze Katz". As a result, the city administration renamed the “Petersborn” and “Kapertchen” vineyards above the Catholic Church to the “Zeller Schwarze Katz” location.

In 1863, two wine sellers wanted to buy a barrel of wine. They tried one cask after the other and couldn't really decide. Black Cat (also Zeller Black Cat) is a large site in the town of Zell on the Mosel in the wine-growing region of the same name. It is part of the Burg Cochem area and consists of the following individual sites:

in Zell: Nußberg, Burglay-Felsen, Petersborn-Kabertchen, Pommerell, Kreuzlay, Domherrenberg, Geisberg.

in the Merl district: Sonneck, Adler, Königslay-Terrassen, Stephansberg, Fettgarten, Klosterberg.

in the Kaimt district: Marienburger, Rosenborn, Römerquelle.

80% of the wines from the large site are now exported, including to Japan, the USA, Canada and South America.[1]
