The square Cérès basin was designed between 1672 and 1679 by Thomas Regnaudin, based on a design by Charles Le Brun. Ceres, Roman goddess of the harvest, is seated on a bed of wheat sheaves, accompanied by cornflowers and roses. Symbol of summer, it complements that of Bacchus, Flora and Saturn, which embody the other three seasons.
