Since the reclamation of the Prosperpolder in 1846, the area has been governed from four homesteads. However, at the end of the 19th century there was an increase in the number of leased farms and dike workers were housed, so that the number of inhabitants of the Prosperpolder increased sharply. This population increase created a need for a place of worship. In 1904, the Duke of Arenberg, owner and operator of the polder, had a former engine room converted into a chapel and made an old dairy available to accommodate a priest. The chapel was consecrated on April 30. In 1905 the first plans were made to establish a new parish which would be formed from two parts of the parishes of Kieldrecht and Doel. On March 2, 1907, the new parish was established and the chapel recognized as an auxiliary church.
