This pilgrimage chapel was built on the spot where, according to tradition, two miraculous crucifixes were found in 1317. The brick pit near the Cross Chapel indicates the exact location of where the crosses were excavated at the time.

One cross is kept in the church of Eksaarde, the other in the Cross Chapel. The two crosses are symbolically connected by a Stations of the Cross with 14 state chapels.
