One of the few dams in Thuringia where swimming is allowed. The water is very shallow on the north-eastern side, and the bathing spots are idyllically located between the reeds.
The Hopfgarten dam near Weimar serves to protect against flooding and to increase the low water levels of the Gramme, a tributary of the Unstrut. The barrier structure is a 368 m long and 15 m high earth dam.
It is also a swimming lake, there are beautiful secluded spots around the reservoir.
