The St. George's Church in Sengwarden

The church of Sengwarden was first mentioned in a document in 1168. The current building dates from around 1250. The north wall is the oldest part of the church. It is built in the Romanesque style with large granite blocks smoothed on one side. In the second half of the 15th century the south wall was renewed with bricks and late Gothic windows. The Gothic choir, which was added for embellishment, also dates from this period. The ceiling painting dates from 1904 and was overhauled in 1963. It is based on the old painting of the church in Tettens.

The church measures 42 meters in length, the anteroom 7.50 meters, the nave 23 meters and the choir room 11.50 meters. From the second gallery - above the organ - one gets the best impression of the size of this church. The nave is 12 meters high and 10 meters wide. The entire height to the gable is a proud 20 meters, the roof turret with the horse typical of Senngwarden is 6.50 meters high, so that the entire height of the church is now 26.50 meters. The church is located on a worm 8.60 meters above normal sea level.

The Sengwarder church is particularly interesting because it has a Romanesque and a Gothic wall. Inside the church you can see treasures of North German culture. Funny is the "egg timer" at the pulpit, which is to keep the preacher from preaching too long. "A Lutheran pastor can preach about everything, but not over 15 minutes!" 😉
