Unlike in most places, Hooksiel Church is not in the old town center of Hooksiel, but in the much older village of Pakens, around two kilometers away.
The origins of the church go back to the 2nd half of the 13th century. The church walls form a rectangular interior and the bell tower, as is often found in Frisian churches, is slightly offset next to the church building.
Next to the church is a large parking lot, a wonderful starting and finishing point for bike tours.

A wonderful place to reflect and pause. Also as start and finish (lonely parking) ideally suited.
But what counts: an extraordinary church in a unique environment. Like every church, especially the Frisian and East Frisian, a must to seek out the spirit of hundreds of generations.
Here is the special the lonely location, the architectural structure (huge granite blocks, the room vault). There is much more to discover. And, as I said, the terrain on the warft. What a beauty!
Particular attention is drawn to a ship model of the seal captive "Adelheid", which sank before Jan Mayen near Greenland in 1848 and whose crew is still remembered here.

The church is on a high hill. It was built in the 13th century from granite blocks.
The church is located on a high hill in Pakens. It was built in the late 13th century from granite blocks. Later the apse was raised with bricks and given a conical roof. There has been a crucifixion relief on the front since the 15th century. The original bell tower was built in 1505, but had to be demolished in 1960/61 due to its dilapidation. Newly bricked, the basement offers space for a funeral hall.
The three-bay cathedral vault and the sandstone altarpiece from 1691 are worth mentioning. The baptismal font is decorated with garlands and angel heads and is carried by three well-fed putti. The church can be reached via the bypass road or on foot/bicycle via Pakenser Straße or Burgweg.

A ship model of the sealer ADELHEIT attracts particular attention. It sank off Greenland in 1848 and its crew is still commemorated here.
