The Lauffen barrage is located at the upper end of an approximately 0.8 km long, narrow lock canal (Lauffen Canal). It consists, in the direction of flow of the Neckar River, of a double lock on the right bank, a three-span weir, and a power plant on the left bank. A road bridge (B 27) crosses the Neckar River directly below the lock chambers. In the right lock chamber, the lower gate was upgraded in 1982 and the upper gate in 1986. The concrete walls, as well as the drives and electrical systems, date back to the construction period and have not been modified.

At Lauffen the Neckar is dammed to a "real" small lake on which water sportsmen and sailors are on the way. However, I would not dare to go swimming.
