The Millicher Halde is a tailings dump of the Sophia-Jacoba coal mine in Hückelhoven. The volume of the 70 meter high heap is 10 million cubic meters of overburden on an area of 32 hectares.
In 2008, a staircase of around 120 m and 400 steps was built to the vantage point, as well as hiking trails and vantage points. An eleven meter high steel "staircase to heaven" as a viewing platform on the heap offers views over the Jülich Börde to the edge of the Eifel and over the Rur lowland.

At the top of the Millicher Halde, a surprising panorama awaits: from the Himmelstreppe, the long staircase that winds like a ribbon across the slope, you look out over the flat surroundings of Hückelhoven and the foothills of the Ruhr region.

In clear weather, the view extends far beyond the villages and forests – a quiet reminder of how this former mining site has returned to nature. Young forest grows along the path, heather sprouts between the stones, and birds sing above the rolling hills.

Those who make the climb in the evening are rewarded with a beautiful sunset: the sky turns orange and purple as shadows slowly drift across the steps. A place where industrial history and tranquility intertwine.
