More like a long drag of a French alpine climb, this one makes no secret of its length, as right from the outset you'll be able to spot the ever present sight of the transmitter tower at the top (524 metres above sea level). The 2014 Tour de France passed over this climb and there were reportedly 60,000 spectators lining the road - the footage is pretty cool!

The gradient ramps up in Holmbridge to 12.5%, before easing a little through Holme. The final 2.2km (around 1.5 miles) have an average gradient of 9.3% and wide, open views that ease the suffering somewhat (ideally, you'll hit this climb when the sun is out!).

iconic climb used in the Tour de France 2014 - the climb is quite short, but very steep. the winding climb is pretty unique to anything in the UK, but is was pretty tough - this was my first time climbing this

Climbed this in September 2020 on a really warm day without my climbing legs on. My first real injection into cycle climbing. With a 52/36t front cog and 30t rear it was a tough climb, but worth the effort. Going to try this again with better preparation and different gears, but I will do it again and hopefully enjoy it a little more.

Starting from Holme it’s not long at a shade over 2km, but with a near constant 10% gradient it's definitely punishing

iconic climb that I've always wanted to do. Will most definitely come back again when I get chance. Steady and very rewarding for the views and the arguably finest downhill section after.

This is a beautiful climb from both sides and both sides are quite hard and steep in places! It can get very busy on sunny days especially on the weekend. The views are more than worth the climb.

Gorgeous steady climb up the valley from the Manchester side. Not too busy car wise, good road quality. The way down into Holme valley is a bit rougher and more twisty, so maybe coming up that way might be better, then you can enjoy the fast decent onto Woodhead ?

Ridden up both sides though I prefer the long but steady climb from the south as it also offers great views of the Huddersfield area on the descent. Look out for Castle Hill; its Victoria Tower makes for a well-known 1000' landmark in the area, but it is dwarfed from the top of Holme Moss. Hard to believe that my dad and others in the Star Wheelers used to ride over here on fixies in the 1950s.
