    In my opinion, Gavia is one of the most scenic climbs in all of Italy. Its landscape is sometimes lunar. Must do at least once in a lifetime. The effort will pay off, I can guarantee it!

    P.S. : bring some lights for the passage of the gallery which is almost at the end of the climb, as the gallery is not lit.

      The ascent to Passo Gavia, once out of the woods and tackling the steepest sections, offers many km with a breathtaking 360° landscape, from the snowy area of Adamello (where Calotta, Cima Salimmo, Castellaccio stand out), the slope of the Valle delle Messi with the imposing Cima Coleazzo and Cima Pietrarossa, to then - like in a film - be embraced by this plain that encompasses Cima Gavia, Corno dei Tre Signori and Cima Gaviola, with the gaze oriented towards the Dosegù Glacier (Tresero, San Matthew, etc.).
      Severe landscape, but at the same time of devastating beauty.

                Both the north and south ramps of the Gavia are almost entirely demanding, but the panorama on both sides makes up for this, as does the significantly lower traffic density, e.g. compared to the Stelvio. However, the road conditions on both ramps and an unlit tunnel on the south side are also not entirely unproblematic (as of June 2022).

                    Passo Gavia is located at an altitude of 2,621 meters above sea level.

                    It connects Bormio in the Valtellina Valley with Ponte di Legno in the Camonica Valley.

                    The pass lies in the heart of the Stelvio National Park, so it is surrounded by rugged, truly high-altitude landscapes: glaciers, bare rocks, steep walls, and the Lago Bianco lake right at the summit.

                      The road to Gavia is narrow, winding, and in many places there are no guardrails – especially on the Ponte di Legno side.

                      The pass is usually open from late May/June to October, depending on snow conditions.

                      The climb from Bormio is long but more even; from Ponte di Legno it is narrower, more dramatic, with exposure and spectacular switchbacks.

                        The Passo Gavia is an icon of the Giro d'Italia. It was first included in the race in 1960, and its true glory came with a stage in 1988: riders rode through blizzards and sub-zero temperatures, many ending up half-conscious from hypothermia.

                        Since then, the Gavia has become a symbol of cycling heroism, comparable to the Stelvio or the Mortirolo.

                                Passo del Gavia is one of the Top-10 in Italy. Toughness, altitude, length, scenic beauty and a myth in the history of cycling. It is a MUST.
                                Its two sides are beautiful and very tough. Both are worth the effort and must be climbed. They are nothing alike. The most classic side is the one that starts from Ponte di Legno.
                                The best recommendation is to climb and enjoy every detail.
