Inaugurated in 1928, the San Sebastian Aquarium is the oldest natural museum in Spain and today is one of San Sebastian's main attractions. The main objectives of the beginning has been an educational ambition and the desire to raise awareness of environmental issues. The aquarium has undergone numerous renovations over the years, including in 1998 when a huge 1,800,000 liter basin was built (the oceanarium) with a transparent tunnel through the water to walk through. In addition to the oceanarium, a total of 37 aquariums can now be admired.
