Since the early Middle Ages, SHEEP & GOATS have been kept by PEOPLE for USE, individually or in small groups, on farms. Over time, rich landlords, dukes and counts established specialized sheep farms and kept larger and larger herds that could graze on the subjects' pastures. In addition to the meat of the sheep, the wool was the coveted raw material that the animals were supposed to provide.

The increasing population and ever-expanding cities allowed cloth-making to flourish and wool was traded at high prices. The demand for wool continued to increase and reached its peak in the mid-19th century. After that, the import of wool from Australia and New Zealand started, the demand decreased more and more and finally fell by almost 90%.

Nevertheless, sheep farming has remained deeply rooted in the Swabian Jura to this day. In Baden-Württemberg, the biosphere reserve and the Swabian Jura are the core areas of shepherding and the cradle of the Merino sheep – the sheep breed typical of southern Germany to this day.
