The Cassel mill is located at the top of Mount Cassel, a place called the castle terrace. It is an authentic stopover for your stay in the Nord-Pas de Calais.
In the past, about twenty mills (made of wood on a pivot) were located on Mount Cassel, but these have all gradually disappeared ... In 1949 Cassel then bought an old mill that had fallen into ruins in a neighboring town, restored it and then placed it in the public garden of the Mount. It is called Kasteel Meulen (castle mill).

In Flanders, windmills have been used since the Middle Ages, and if today their use is mainly touristic,

There was a time when wind was necessary for the production of the staple food for both humans and pets.

No wind, no flour!

The millers also loosened the sails of their mill as soon as the wind blew and ground the grain, regardless of the time of day or night.

The best known use is the grist mill, which reduced the grain to flour using two stone millstones, generally the mill had two pairs of millstones, one for the man's food and one for livestock feed.

Less well known, the oil mills produced rapeseed oil and linseed oil for food and lighting using a press.

The tannery, meanwhile, was used to grind oak bark for tanning hides.

The mill on the castle terrace stood on top of Mount Cassel as early as the 16th century, but unfortunately it disappeared due to fire in 1911. In 1937, the last mill in Cassel burned down, it was an oil press. So there was no more mill in a town that had more than twenty.

In 1949 the city bought a ruined mill in Arnèke, restored it and the blades turned again on the top of the Casselberg. In 1983 a new adventure began for this wooden giant. In 1992 the first flour came from the stone millstones and in 1999 the construction of a mini oil mill allowed a demonstration of pressing linseed into oil.
