The municipality of Porto Azzurro is located on the east coast of Elba. Forte San Giacomo, built by the Spaniards on a rocky outcrop at the beginning of the 17th century to guard and protect the bay and its surroundings, can be seen from afar both from the sea and from land. At the end of the 19th century, a prison was housed here, which from then on was inextricably linked to the name of the place. With the arrival of the first tourism, the place wanted to give itself a new image, and in the course of these efforts even the name was changed in 1947, and Porto Longone became the euphonious Porto Azzurro.

There are not many good cycle paths near Porto Azzuro on the island of Elba, but I can highly recommend this bike tour from Porto Azzuro to Capoliveri. It runs on side roads with fantastic views and some of the path is even only approved as a cycle path. It is also pleasant to drive in summer, as beautiful pine trees often cast cool shade
