A castle with a beautiful appearance, but not recognizable as such at first glance.
The Vellinghausen Castle in Welver was built around the year 1300. It was first mentioned in a document in 1352.
The castle was once surrounded by moats, which are only partially present today. The complex itself is in good condition. It includes the main building and the stable buildings, which were renovated in the 1990s, as well as the gatehouse, which was built in half-timbered style. Vellinghausen Castle is privately inhabited and can only be viewed from the outside.

Vellinghausen Castle was first documented in 1352 under the knight Rötger von Galen, who also called himself de Vellinchusen. At that time, there was already a castle that no longer exists.
In 1564 and 1566, the brothers Heinrich and Dietrich von Galen divided the inheritance. As part of the division of the inheritance, Heinrich and his wife Clara von Vridag received, among other things, Vellinghausen Castle. Heinrich had been Landmarschall of the Teutonic Order since 1535 and Master of the Order in Livonia since 1551.
The castle, which still stands today, was completed in 1598. This can at least be assumed, as the Renaissance fireplace on the ground floor is dated 1598.
Dorothea von Galen, the daughter of Heinrich von Galen and his wife Clara von Vridag, brought the castle into her marriage to Johann von Neheim on February 20, 1569.
In 1700, the imperial general Dietrich Heinrich von Neheim sold the Vellinghausen estate to Kaspar Heinrich von Voss, who was married to Margareta von Korff-Schmising. As a result of the marriage, the east façade and the hipped roof were adapted to the Baroque style. The double coat of arms of the builders was also added above the entrance portal.

This latter marriage remained childless, so the castle passed into the hands of a distant relative, Heinrich Victor von Voss. In 1746, he married Beata Elisabeth von Vincke, whose son from his first marriage, Ernst Idel Jobst von Vincke, inherited Vellinghausen.

The von Vincke family held Vellinghausen Castle until 1979. The castle and its lands then passed to the Wevers heirs from Gescher, who sold the castle, along with its outbuildings and 35,000 m² of agricultural land, to Dr. Meinolf Schultebraucks and his wife Manuela resold the castle. They still use it as their residence today. The couple also owns, among other properties, the nearby Sengerhof House since 1990.
The main castle has a living space of 240 m². The building houses six living rooms, five of which have fireplaces.
Today, the moat is largely filled in. Only a small remnant remains on the south side. However, the old moat is to be restored.
In 1990, the castle grounds were declared an archaeological monument.
