The Lechenich gate buildings were given different names over the course of their history, but they always referred to the destination of the path that began and continued there. The Herriger Gate, which today leads to the neighboring district of Herrig, was called “Harger portze” in 1371 and in the 17th century it was the “Dürener Port”. Today's Bonn Gate was mentioned in a document in 1357 as “bunre portze” and referred to the former Coronation Road, the country road to Bonn.

After the existing fortifications of the 13th century had been destroyed around 1301 along with the old castle, a renewed attempt was made to fortify the city. It is not known whether the two gate structures of the enclosing wall were built at the same time or first. They must have existed at the latest under the prince-bishops Walram von Jülich († 1349) and his successor Wilhelm von Gennep († 1362), who completed the enclosing wall. The Herriger gate was first mentioned in 1371 after the Bonn gate in 1357. In this document it was stated on the occasion of a land survey: "The wheat field is 226 acres in size and lies in front of the Lechenich gate, called the Bonn gate (bunre portze). will be between the public road and the forest Eilau".
