In 1958 and in two years of construction, the German Democratic Republic (GDR) established its own military airfield on the site of the former railway pioneers in Sperenberg (Teltow-Fläming district), which has existed since about 1880. Previously, the Soviet forces had used the airfield Berlin-Schoenefeld. Before 1945, the airfield belonged to the nearby High Command of the Wehrmacht (OKW) in Wünsdorf.
The Förderverein Museum Kummersdorf e.V. has a notice board providing information about official tours of the Kummersdorf barracks and Sperenberg Airport.
