The church in St. Stefan am Walde was built in 1147 and is one of the few examples of the transition from Gothic to Renaissance, it is built in the late Gothic style. The nave is a simple 4-bay hall with an adjoining late Gothic choir.

The interior of the church was redesigned in 2011/2012. The contemporary artist Markus Hofer took the floor plan of the church as the starting point for the new altar. This floor plan is then literally cut out on a smaller scale and folded back together in a special way. The new places in the church, such as the altar and the ambo, result from your own building.

The Genesis Saga

The "Stefanstritt", 500 m from the town center, is the location of a famous legend - when the little church of St. Stefan was to be built, the builders agreed on a spot on the Stefinger Bachl. They started to work. The next morning, however, their work was destroyed. While they rebuilt it during the day, it was destroyed at night. Then one day Saint Stephen appeared to the builders in the form of a carpenter. He asked them to build the little church where he hurled his hatchet. He picked up a carpenter's ax and hurled it high over the treetops. The carpenters followed the instructions. And so the church stands today in the place that Saint Stephen had determined. She was dedicated to him.

The indentation in the rock next to the old boundary mark is interpreted as a sign of this mystical apparition: it is said to be the imprint of Saint Stephen's foot. After the devil could not prevent the construction of the church, he wanted to at least keep people from going to church at the "devil's seat" not far from the "Stefantritt".
