The unmistakable landmark of Duderstadt is the Westerturm with its helically twisted tip. Once built as a city gate, the western tower with its watchtower, rampart and wall is part of the city's sophisticated medieval fortification system.
The tower, already mentioned in 1343, burned down in 1424 down to the masonry. The reconstruction lasted 12 years. The vernacular attributes the rotation of the spire to the unoiled weather vane or the devil 👹, who seduced the men to drink 🍺. Fleeing from the women of Duderstadt, he wanted to cling to the top of the tower and jerked the top around before finally disappearing over the wall.
