This small chapel is dedicated to the Virgin Mary, specifically under the patronage of "Maria Dolorosa," commonly known in German as the "Sorrowful Madonna." In corresponding depictions, the Virgin Mary is usually surrounded by seven swords piercing her body or heart. The biblical origin for this can be found in the Gospel of Luke, where Simeon says to Mary about her son Jesus Christ:
"Look, this child is destined to cause the falling and rising of many in Israel, and he will be a sign that will be spoken against, and a sword will pierce your own soul..." (Luke 2:34-35)
