RECONSTRUCTION OF GERMAN TRENCHES
Before you want to visit this site, it is best to make some time for a short visit at the tourist office in Kemmel. a FREE film projection (less than half an hour) takes you through the region during the Great War. Ask for it at the counter. The Site itself is actually a reconstruction of the original German trenches. It's nice to walk through here. Kids love this trench system. Proper footwear provided in rainy weather.

In the Croonaertbos in Wijtschate (Heuvelland) part of a German trench system can be seen. The German troops captured this site from the French in 1914 and renamed the site "Bayernwald". Here you will also find two listening shafts. The German soldiers feared British deep mines and thanks to these corridors they were able to eavesdrop on enemy activities. Bayernwald has been reconstructed based on archaeological research and shows you 10% of the original construction from WWI.
