At least three aspire to be the lowest point in Poland. Surveyors' measurements show that geography textbooks have provided incorrect information over the years. So where is the lowest point and at the same time the greatest depression in Poland?
Raczki Elbląskie was officially considered the lowest point in Poland. The village is situated in Żuławy Elbląskie near Druzno Lake. The depression there was 1.8 m.
There is a monument there: a red rod with the sea level marked. If the sea flooded the depression in Raczki, it would cover an adult man.
The name Raczki Elbląskie was mentioned in all geography textbooks as the greatest depression in Poland.
Even though it is a very interesting place, it is not the lowest point in our country. So where is it located?
Or maybe Wikrowo?
In Wikrów, in the commune of Gronowo Elbląskie, there is a point located at a height of 2.6 m above sea level. The commune authorities triumphantly announced that this is where the greatest depression in the country is located.
Admittedly - 2.6 m is an impressive result, but it is not a natural depression. There was a peat excavation in this place. Therefore, the record from Wikrow cannot be considered. Depression is man-made.
Raczki Elbląskie is not officially the lowest point in the country anymore. The Main Office of Geodesy and Cartography has measured that it is in the village of Marzęcino, also located in Żuławy Elbląskie, that the greatest Polish depression is located.
There are several points lower than the one in Raczki Elbląskie in Marzęcin. The greatest depression is the one lying at a height of 2.07 m below sea level.

Perhaps it should be honestly noted on the information board that this is one of the lowest-lying places in the country, which for many years in the past was considered the lowest-lying place in Poland, and cleverly not say anything more in this place, creating a certain aura of mystery .... and an inquisitive tourist will solve this riddle on his own - "A well-fed wolf and a whole sheep".

It was the lowest point, but officially, since 2022, the lowest point has been considered to be the one in Marzęcino. Personally, I think I prefer Raczki and I often stop there during trips.
