The Lange Jaap can be seen from a great distance and is therefore a good orientation aid for tours in the area.
At a height of 63.45 meters, the Lange Jaap was the highest lighthouse in the Netherlands for a long time before it was replaced by the new Maasvlakte lighthouse. The Lange Jaap is still the highest cast-iron lighthouse in Europe. Construction of the tower began in 1877 and it was put into operation on April 1, 1878. The lighthouse has a hexagonal basic shape and consists of cast-iron plates bolted together with a total weight of 506,100 kilograms. The architect of the tower was Quirinus Harder. The "Lange Jaap" has been a listed building since 1988.

The Lange Jaap was put into operation in 1878. The lighthouse was declared a national monument in 1988.

At 63.45 meters, the Lange Jaap is the highest lighthouse still burning in the Netherlands and the highest cast-iron tower in Europe. The climb to the top has 284 steps. It is not open to the public.
