The Battle of the Silver Helmets took place on Aug. 12, 1914 in the Limburg town of Halen. It was the last major battle at equestrian division level and the only Belgian victory without help from Allies over German troops during W.O.I. The name "BATTLE OF SILVER HELMETS" comes from finding the shining headwear after the fight; Pastor poet A. Cuppens wrote a ballad about it.
This battle entered the history books because it was the very last time the cavalry charged in Western Europe. Eventually the Germans lost on horseback from the Belgian cyclists.
44 concrete Stahl helmets that symbolize the German occupation in Limburg. Each helmet represents one Limburg municipality and was artfully crafted by local artists, associations and schools. Put together, the helmets show very different and varied perspectives on the theme of war and memory.
