On the occasion of his marriage to the Austrian Emperor's daughter Maria Antonia in June 1685, the young Elector Max Emanuel (ruled 1680-1726) commissioned the construction of the Lustheim hunting and garden palace. Placed at a distance of about 1300 meters from the (old) castle in its central axis, Lustheim was to form the center of its own gardens. In the course of the palace construction, the erection of large colonnaded buildings in the eastern semicircle behind Lustheim Palace had also begun. They were to structurally connect the two pavilion buildings to the north and south of Schloss Lustheim in a wide arc, only interrupted by the paths and the central canal. Due to construction defects and the death of the builder and architect, this part of the complex came to a standstill. Nevertheless, today's Lustheim Palace is a superbly maintained part of the entire Schleissheim palace complex and more than deserves its own attention.
