Wikipedia: The St. Ludgerus Church in Essen-Werden is considered one of the most important late Romanesque churches in the Rhineland. It was built at the beginning of the 9th century as the abbey church of the Benedictine monastery Werden and was redesigned in the 13th century in the Rhenish transitional style. Outside the actual church building is the crypt with the shrine of St. Ludgerus. Since the Abbey's abolition, St. Ludgerus has been a Catholic parish church. She has been wearing the title of a basilica minor since 1983. If you look from the Ruhr bridge towards Essen Werden is the basilica in my opinion, a real landmark.

For those who have time, the paid treasury is worthwhile. Short visit to the Basilica always recommended, under the altar, an underground tour, where the remains of Saint Ludgerus are kept.
