Alp Sücka, Steg
Alp Sücka in the Samina valley, municipality of Triesenberg, 1177-1706 m above sea level, alpine building and mountain inn at 1402 m above sea level, 130.6 ha, 54 ha of which are productive pastures. Borders to the west on the Kulm, to the south on the Alpelti, to the north on Silum and Bargälla, to the east on Steg. Name to dialectal Sügga, Alemannic Sügge (swampy area). In 1963, in the Sücka area at about 1470 m above sea level. a bronze spearhead of the Late Bronze Age found (ca. 12th/11th century BC). When it was first mentioned in the Brandis Urbar (around 1509/17), Sücka was considered a Triesner Alp, while today's Düraboda Alp part is referred to as a separate Walser Alp. From around 1600, Düraboda appeared as a stately alp and Sücka also belonged to the Counts of Hohenems in the 17th century (as in the 1681 tax office account) and from 1712 to the Princes of Liechtenstein. In the 17th century, the people of Hohenems sold some parts of the Alp to private individuals from Triesenberg. In the 18th century, the Sücka was first leased to the Triesenbergers, at the latest from 1734 to individuals from the Schellenberg dominion and from 1783 to the early 19th century to the local subjects, then to the communities of Triesen and Triesenberg, and finally to the citizens of Vaduz. In 1887, the municipality of Triesenberg was able to purchase the Sücka at an auction from Prince Johann II on the condition that they give up the individual alpine dairy on all their municipal alps (purchase price 36,320 guilders).
Sücka is traditionally a cow alp. According to the Urbar from 1509/17, Düraboda had to give up 4 pounds of lard and 1 piece of cheese as whey to the rulers. In 1928 128 cows were summered, in 1984 124, in 2004 103 dairy cows with cheese making, whereby the stocking rate has been fixed at 80 livestock units since 1997. In addition, pigs were always summered (15 in 2004).
By the 1870s at the latest, i.e. even before it was acquired by the municipality of Triesenberg, the alpine buildings were also used as a whey and climatic health resort. Sücka was thus one of the first tourist stations in the Liechtenstein mountain region. In 1888-90 the stables were renovated and a new spa house was built, which has since been leased and to this day offers overnight accommodation as the «Berggasthaus Sücka». The Kulm–Steg road, laid out around 1867/68, also opened up the Sücka for carriages. The road has been used as a natural toboggan run in winter since 1963. The legend of Sückacheris, a dishonest and gambling-addicted herdsman, takes place on Alp Sücka.
