Ploegsteert Wood Military Cemetery was created after opening up a number of smaller regimental cemeteries. Ten graves from Lot I, as well as the entire Lot II, originally formed the Sommerset Light Infantery Cemetery. It was used by the 1st Battalion of that regiment in December 1914. Lot II contains 16 graves of the Gloucestershire Regiment and also some graves of the Royal North Lancashire Regiment. This lot was known as 'Canadian Cemetery, Strand', because of the 28 Canadian graves from 1915 and the trench known as "The Strand" that ran nearby. The cemetery remained in use during the years 1916 and 1917 and fell into German hands during the German Spring Offensive from April 10 to September 29, 1918.
