In 1152, a knight's seat of a Dietrich von Hovestadt was first mentioned in Hovestadt. The archbishops of Cologne, who pursued Westphalia's territorial interests in this part, had a castle built here to protect the Lippe crossing. The castle was mainly directed against the bishops of Münster, but also against the county of Arnsberg, the county of Mark and the lords of the Lippe. The castle was completed around 1276. It offered space to a Drosten and 20 Burgmanns and their families. Castle Hovestadt was destroyed several times - so in 1303 and 1346. After that it was always rebuilt. During the Soest feud of 1444-1449 it had strategic importance for Archbishop Dietrich II von Moers. In 1483, the castle and the office Hovestadt came as a pledge to Godert Ketteler. It remained in the family Ketteler. Goswin von Ketteler had the castle rebuilt between 1563 and 1572 into a castle.

The line Hovestadt derer von Ketteler died out in the 17th century, and the property came in 1649 to the barons of Heiden Schönrath and Boke. In 1710 Freiherr - later Count - Friedrich Bernhard Wilhelm von Plettenberg-Lenhausen acquired the property. The Plettenberg-Lenhausen family moved their headquarters from Schloss Lenhausen to Hovestadt. This also started a new construction activity. To date, both castles are inhabited by branches of the Counts of Plettenberg.
