For more than 800 years people have settled in Stiepelse. Here they have found a place that was safe from flooding for centuries due to its elevated position. The people not only took advantage of the direct location on the river for fishing, but drove lively trade u.a. with cattle in the direction of Hamburg and lignite from the Leipzig area. The GDR era meant a deep cut in the way of life. The river became the limit and lost its function as an economic factor. Since Stiepelse played an important role in the Agricultural Production Cooperative, the place was spared from major resettlement actions. It is one of the few well-preserved Niedersachsendörfer on rechtselbischer side. After the opening of the border, the idyllic location on the river quickly gained in importance. Many visitors from the surrounding area, but also from the Hamburg and Berlin areas promoted the opening of two restaurants and a pension company, which have been committed for the well-being of visitors for many years. After completion of the dike construction work in 2008, the village recorded a jump in cycle tourism. Visitors like to stay in the village and use the dining facilities, sunbathe on the dike, play on the beach or go swimming in the Elbe.
