The Elisabethfehn Canal connects the Ems with the Hunte from Oldenburg via the Leda. The canal is an inland waterway and there are a number of pleasure boats sailing along it. The bike path along the canal is wonderfully paved and straight. On Ascension Day, Germany's longest flea market takes place here, with around 2,000 tables set up along the canal.

As beautiful as the canal is, it is annoying to cycle along it - if, yes, if you drive on the wrong side.

In my opinion, the "wrong side" is the one on which you drive on bumpy pavement directly along the shore, that may look idyllic - comfortable cycling is better recommended on the opposite, paved side. Short-distance cyclists will also be happy on the bumpy route, because the canal is really beautiful - and the best thing is - it will remain navigable.

A seemingly endless canal through the elongated Fehnkolonie Elisabethfehn can be navigated differently and romantically on both sides of the canal. As almost everywhere in the fen colonies in the northwest, there is a good and a moderately or not at all developed canal side along the canals. As in Cologne on the Rhine, there is also a "Schäl Sick", so to speak, an ugly side.

In ancient times, the respective prosperity as well as the length of residence played a role on which side of the canal you lived. Well developed - older and richer; poorly developed - younger and poorer. Paradoxically, today people usually live more quietly, and therefore better, on the poorly developed side.
