If you want to see it you have to pay close attention to where it is, unfortunately I cycled past it by accident.

Impressive views of the Douglas DC-6 plane that crashed on July 19, 1986 a few meters from the top of Puig de les Canals in its attempt to put out the forest fire. Adverse weather conditions with wind gusts of more than 100 kilometers and poor visibility due to smoke were the causes of the catastrophe.

The tragic accident of the French Douglas DC-6 plane in Alt Empordà occurred on July 19, 1986. The plane, belonging to the French civil protection, departed from the Marignane base in Marseille around one in the afternoon. However, the control tower lost track of him at approximately a quarter to two. Witnesses confirmed that the plane had crashed in an area near Requesens.

The four crew members of the plane, pilot Jean Pierre Davenat, co-pilot Jacques Ogier, mechanic Roland Denard and assistant Jack Le Bel, died instantly in the accident. It was noted that the combination of smoke and strong winds from the Tramuntana, which exceeded 120 km/h, played a crucial role in the disaster.

On that day, the Empordà region suffered fires in multiple locations, resulting in approximately 16,000 hectares burned. Various emergency forces were mobilized, including firefighters, the Civil Guard, the National Police, the Mossos d'Esquadra, the Red Cross, local police, army forces and numerous volunteers, all working exhaustively to control the fires.

Today, the Empordà landscape has recovered, and the ruins of the DC-6 in the Sierra de l'Albera remain as a somber reminder of the tragedy and a tribute to those who lost their lives trying to put out the fire. The memories of these four young Frenchmen, who sacrificed their lives in the line of duty, are still present in the area, especially when the north wind blows through the wreckage of the plane.youtube.com /watch?v=N58ivhTfVU4

The Douglas DC-6 is a historic aircraft with several interesting aspects:

The Douglas DC-6 was developed by the Douglas Aircraft Company. It first entered service in 1946 and was manufactured until 1958.

Depending on its configuration, a DC-6 typically required a flight crew of three to four people, including the pilot, co-pilot, navigator, and sometimes a flight engineer.

Although the DC-6 was originally developed as a commercial aircraft, it was also used for military purposes. It was used by the United States Air Force and other armed forces to transport troops and cargo. However, its main use was in peacetime as a passenger and cargo aircraft.

The DC-6 was one of the first aircraft to have the capability of non-stop transcontinental flights in the United States.

There were several versions of the DC-6, including the DC-6A (freighter) and the DC-6B (improved passenger version).

After their commercial life, many DC-6s were used by smaller cargo airlines, and some were even converted for use in forest firefighting operations.

Several DC-6s have been preserved in museums and collections around the world, highlighting their historical importance in aviation.

What surprised me most during my visit was the squeaking of the rudder, caused by a light breeze that did not stop at any time while I was there. The strong wind, which exceeded 120 km/h that day, along with smoke, are thought to have been key factors in the disaster. What deeply outrages me is that the top was barely 20 meters away; Looking at the position in which he was left (leaning), it is evident that he tried to overcome that height without success. Unfortunately, it is believed that the weight of the water was what finally prevented it from surpassing that mark.

In a movie they always just make it to the top, how unlucky this crew was, so close to the top and just missing out.

The Douglas DC-6 aircraft involved in the tragic 1986 accident in Alt Empordà was dedicated to civil protection tasks, specifically to fight fires. This type of aircraft was used for firefighting operations, which involves transporting water or chemical retardants that are released on forest fires to help control and extinguish the flames.

On July 19, 1986, when the accident occurred, the plane was participating in the extinguishing operations of a large forest fire that affected the Empordà region. These missions are critical for fire control in hard-to-reach areas and are often performed under challenging flight conditions, especially in mountainous regions or with strong winds such as the Tramuntana, which is common in that area.

Hello, quick question, where can you park a car at least far away to finish on foot without traveling 10 km? I have occasional health problems that prevent me from walking for long periods at the moment, but I would still like to see this wreck.

Curious place where you can see among the trees the remains of a plane, I imagine that it would crash there. As you go down to your left on a curve you have to pay attention, as you go down very quickly you won't see it.
