The town, picturesquely located on the river terraces of the Weser Valley, has around 950 inhabitants and is well connected to the national transport network via the B 83. Wehrden is also the only town in Beverungen that has a train stop. From May to the end of September a passenger ferry crosses to the opposite bank.
The place was first mentioned in a deed of donation from 860 and belonged to Corvey until it was transferred to the noble family of Amelunxen as a fief. Wehrden Castle, which was built in 1696 from a moated castle, has typical features of the Weser Renaissance. The poet Annette von Droste-Hülshoff liked to stay here. The parish church dates from the same period and by the same architect. The town has around 40 jobs in various small businesses; the number of agricultural businesses is declining. For this reason, most residents work outside of Wehrden.
