About ten kilometers north of Bremervörde, the Oste meanders through a gentle geest landscape. Far from large settlements and traffic, the river valley is ideal for hiking. The barge ferry in Gräpel is a perfect example. When passengers ring the bell on the west bank, opposite the "Zum Osteblick" inn, innkeeper and ferryman Stefan Plate takes action, ferrying passengers, bicycles, and sometimes even a car across the river. This is done gently and silently: the barge, built around 1918, is pulled across the water by hand using a chain anchored in the ground.

A fantastic cycling route all around. There's plenty of beautiful scenery and information panels along the way. Several locks are located on the route, and there are plenty of pleasant places to sit. With a bit of luck, you might even spot deer 🦌 in the distance. The ferry landing in Gräpel offers a lovely crossing to the other side. There's lots of information available near the ferry landing, so a visit is highly recommended. There are also great places to sit and a shelter.
