Construction of the church began at the end of the 12th century and its basic structure was completed at the beginning of the 13th century. In the 13th century, the kings Alfonso X the Wise and his son Sancho IV were closely linked to the temple, one on a literary level, the other on a religious level: Alfonso X received twelve of his Cantigas de Santa María from him inspired, while Sancho IV made pilgrimages there several times during Holy Week to do penance before the Virgin of Villasirga, whom he greatly venerated (Wikipedia).

This church looks impressive from the outside and is designed almost like a castle. It was built by the Knights Templar. However, no traces of this can be found inside the church.
