Starting from the Pisan fortress in Marciana, you can reach the pilgrimage church of the Madonna del Monte via a well-maintained pilgrimage route with the 12 Stations of the Passion of Christ. The church, surrounded by greenery, has a particularly fascinating location and dates from around the 16th century (although there is evidence that this place was visited in ancient times). The church is rather bare inside, the penumbra, the silence and the freshness of this sanctuary create a very peaceful and fascinating atmosphere. The image of the Madonna Assunta in heaven, painted on a block of granite, probably dates from the 13th century, when the image was placed in a small aedicule in front of the fountain, which was subsequently incorporated into the church. During the renovation work in 1995, 16th-century frescoes attributed to the artist Sodoma were discovered behind the main altar. The exedra opposite the façade, from which the purest water of the Capanne constantly gushes, dates from 1690, while the adjacent hermitage dates from the 16th century. S. Paolo della Croce stayed here in 1735, Napoleon used the hermitage for a few days during the summer of 1814 to escape Portoferraio's heat and to meet his Polish lover Maria Walewska, hidden from prying eyes. The Sanctuary of the Madonna del Monte, built in a particularly charming natural setting, dates back to the 16th century. It has frescoes attributed to Sodoma also dating back to the 16th century.
Opposite the façade, there is an exedra dating back to 1690, from which flows very pure water from Mount Capanne. Take the opportunity to fill your water bottles! Picnic tables are also available in front of the church.
The hermitage, right next to the church, dates back to the 16th century.
