The Ruhr West University of Applied Sciences (abbreviated: HRW) is a state university of applied sciences in North Rhine-Westphalia with an engineering orientation, which was founded by the state government in the winter semester of 2009.

Application-oriented research is one of the strengths of the HRW. Five main research areas have been developed so far:

Non-contact or minimally invasive methods

Intelligent mobility

positive computing

water economics and water management

Artificial intelligence from an economic perspective

Among the business partners of the HRW are u. RWW, Siemens Sector Energy, Movie Park Germany, Salzgitter AG, Europipe and Dekra.[3]

The Mühleim campus, which was founded in 2009, is on the site of a former railway repair shop. It was built according to plans by HPP (Hentrich-Petschnigg & Partner) together with ASTOC Architects & Planners, Winter Ingenieure and the Oberhausen planning group and opened in 2016.
