Construction of the cathedral began in 1226, after Henry the Lion's grandson, Henry Borwin II, had decided on the foundation on his deathbed. However, the altar was not consecrated until 1335, as it took that long to complete the venerable building. At Güstrow Cathedral, as with many church buildings of the 13th century, the transition from Romanesque to Gothic can be clearly seen. The cruciform floor plan and the elongated choir area indicate the Romanesque concept. The massive west tower is 44 m high. The interior of the cathedral is significant. Works of art from the 15th and 16th centuries as well as "The Floating Man" by Ernst Barlach can be admired here. The square surrounding the cathedral, the former cathedral freedom, was renovated in 1995. With the civic buildings bordering it, the square conveys the flair of a medieval ensemble in a special way.

The Gothic basilica from the first half of the 13th century is one of the oldest large churches in the country. Just like the parish church on Güstrower Markt, it boasts artistically very valuable furnishings, particularly from the 16th century. From our century, the cathedral houses another significant work of art, the "Floating Angel" by Ernst Barlach, the Güstrower Memorial.
