Not only that, the old town hall is picturesquely situated in the middle of the market square of Lauf, you can eat there and sit outside in the marketplace and watch the pedestrian traffic.
As a goods transhipment point, customs station, weekly and annual market, it received its typical character. Today, behind the sandstone and half-timbered facades, there are attractive courtyards with workshops and farm buildings from the late 17th and 18th centuries.
Many traders were at the same time innkeepers who quartered travelers, wagons, teams, goods and animals and had the right to brew beer. For this reason, the market square is undermined with labyrinthine rock cellars that can be visited on a guided tour.
The free-standing old town hall forms the center of the market square.
