The fire disaster of 1958
Then came the greatest catastrophe for the Holy Sepulcher Chapel after secularisation: in the night of March 25th/26th, 1958 the chapel was almost completely destroyed by fire. At that time, the baroque interior was almost completely lost. Only the altarpiece of the high altar by J. Zwick miraculously remained largely intact. The figures of the side altars were completely preserved. They have been kept in the chapter building to this day. At first they thought of arson. However, it turned out that the fire was caused by children lighting the fire.

Reconstruction until 1961
After the extensive reconstruction of the chapel with the active support of the then mayor Sauer, the spiritual councilor Henkel and his board of directors (FritzRitter, Georg Hemmlein, Merkel Leonhard Anton Schorr) were able to press ahead with the reconstruction. On May 14, 1961, the Holy Sepulchre Chapel was reopened by Pastor Adam Henkel with the participation of the population.

Danger of collapse in the 90s
At the beginning of the 1990s, the Gugelberg began to move again. In 1994, the forces of movement had lifted the anchors holding the chancel arch together. In 1995, as an emergency measure, the anchors had to be replaced to prevent the chancel arch from collapsing.

General renovation and altar consecration 1998-2002
In 1998 Pastor Veit Dennert was finally able to initiate the general renovation of the Holy Sepulcher Chapel. The architectural office Albert & Reinecke, Nuremberg, which is experienced in renovation work, was commissioned with the planning. The church administration of St. Michael/St Augustine, which was commissioned by the Archbishop's Ordinariate to manage the Holy Sepulcher Chapel Foundation in 1994, initiated and accompanied the renovation and financing.
The income saved by the Heilig Grabkapellenstiftung formed the basis for the security, refurbishment and renovation work carried out from 1995 to 2002.
The new altar was consecrated on Sunday August 11, 2002 by Canon Herbert Hauf. Many members of the congregation celebrated the service in and outside of the chapel.
