Wichet is a Walloon corruption of the word “guichet”. It is a side exit from the Old City that gave access to the Lower City. Conversely, it made it easier for residents to go to church or the market.
Le Wichet is known as “Le Wichet de la Rose” in memory of the old Place de la Rose directly opposite.
Although it was dated 1620-1920 when it was restored by Henry Le Bœuf (son-in-law of General Thys), the Wichet is thought to date from 1520.
