Burgos, the capital of the former kingdom of Castile, already acquired its city rights in 920. Burgos played a leading role in the fight against Moorish domination and the care of the pilgrims with no fewer than 32 hospitales. The famous general El Cid (1043-1099) is buried in the middle of the cathedral and was given a statue in Plaza El Cid.

The scallop shell (vieira) is an ancient symbol of the Camino to Santiago. In French it is called a 'Coquille Saint Jacques' and in German a 'Jakobsmuscheln'. There are many stories about the origin of this symbol. The most related is related to the death of Saint James in 44 AD. The story tells how his body was lost in the ocean during a violent storm during the transportation of his remains from Jerusalem to Spain by his disciples. When it washed up on the coast of Galicia, his body was covered with these shells.

During your walk you will encounter the shell very often and it will be your guide, along with the well-known yellow arrow. Although there are parts of the Camino where the longest line on the shell points towards Santiago, it is better not to pay too much attention to this and mainly follow the normal arrows. The direction of the shell is not applied consistently so you could just go wrong.

You will probably carry such a shell in or on your backpack like most pilgrims do: the shell traditionally indicates that you are a traveler on the Camino de Santiago. Buy the original scallop shell with the red cross of Santiago here.
