The name was written Werma in the 8th century and Werina around 1015. It is based on the Indo-European root ûer, meaning water or rain, from which it was derived with an n-suffix. This root is also contained in the name of the Wörnitz River. The river's name was transferred to the communities of Niederwerrn and Werneck, as well as to the towns of Oberwerrn and Wernfeld.

The source of the Wern is disputed. Officially, it rises between Rannungen and Pfersdorf. There is a Wern spring, sometimes also called the Aubrunnen, shown on maps, at about 286 m above sea level, about one kilometer northeast of the center of Pfersdorf. However, this spring only discharges an average of one to two liters per second and dries up completely in the summer.[7] A few steps after this spring, the 4.4 km long Augraben flows in from the northeast, which is also considered the upper course of the Wern because of its higher water flow and much greater length. It originates on the southwest edge of the village of Rannungen at about 326 m above sea level and after about 600 meters turns in the direction of its more or less constant left upper course, which is called the Leingraben or Leimgraben. This Leimgraben is almost 2.0 km long and begins in the municipality of Dittelbrunn, about 700 meters northeast of the center of Pfändhausen near the county road to Rannungen at about 364 m above sea level.
